Pratt & Whitney Canada: A Leading Manufacturer of Aircraft Engines
In 1928, Pratt & Whitney established a Canadian division to service aircraft engines. Since then, Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) has mirrored the growth of its parent company into the world’s top manufacturer of aircraft engines. Today, more than 45,000 P&WC engines are in service in nearly 200 countries around the world.
Research and development remains essential to the company’s success. P&WC spends more on aerospace R&D than anyone else in Canada—approximately $400 million each year. This investment has enabled the company to develop and certify more than 65 new engines in the past 12 years. To foster ongoing innovation, P&WC works closely with Canada’s National Research Council and more than a dozen Canadian universities, and hires an average of 150 students every year.
P&WC maintains numerous facilities across Canada, including a new world-class aerospace centre at Montréal-Mirabel International Airport. In 2010, workers at the Mirabel centre will assemble and test the company’s latest line of engines.
P&WC supports its global fleet of engines with the industry’s most extensive network of service facilities—including more than 30 owned and operated by the company. Of the 9,500 people employed by P&WC worldwide, approximately 6,500 work in Canada. P&WC is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, a technology firm based in Connecticut.
